Description
To cerebrate means to deeply and intensely think, to use the power of reason to process a matter, an issue, a situation.
By accidental coincidence, cerebration sounds very similar to celebration, and this is apt: the ability to think, to meditate, contemplate, analyze, reason, cogitate, in other words, cerebrate, is something to celebrate indeed. Dogs don’t cerebrate. Zebras don’t cerebrate. Even dolphins and elephants, trumpeted as close to humans in intelligence, don’t cerebrate. (House cats look like they cerebrate, but anyone who owns a cat knows better than to be fooled by a domestic feline’s illusion of wisdom.)
Unfortunately and sadly, there are humans who do not cerebrate. Content to watch the TV news and believe what it says, too many humans vegetate, stagnate, mentally deteriorate because they have stopped musing, asking questions, and seeking for answers.
The woman in the artwork, Cerebration, is not a woman who scrolls through her phone for answers. She reposes, quietly and calmly, in a settee. The room is warm, comfortable, private, enabling her to both relax and think without interruption. There is a delight to stretching out her legs, flexing her toes, and the focus she gives to these measured movements mirrors the quiet order of thoughts in her mind.
Wrapped in a towel, she is taking a moment either before a bath or after a bath to mull over something that needs time and concentration. It matters that she is in a quiet place. It matters that the room is private, safe from interruption. And it matters that she has time, plenty of time, to do this thinking that is so very, very necessary.
We all need time, place, and space to cerebrate. That place may be a curtained boudoir, or it may be a trail in the wilderness, but wherever it is, we need it.
Celebrate the ability to cerebrate.
